Milovice Nature Reserve – From army base to wild landscapes
Near Prague, there is a landscape with a surprising past. Milovice was once the most extensive Soviet military base in the Czech Republic. After the army left, the area sat abandoned for decades, full of ruins, illegal dumping, and a feeling that it was closed to everyone.
In 2015, the story changed. A conservation initiative led by European Wildlife and Česká krajina, working with scientists and supported by European funds, has begun transforming this damaged ground into a living reserve. Instead of heavy machinery, the project brought back the animals that shape open landscapes naturally. Today, Milovice is known for something rare: wild horses, European bison and back-bred aurochs living together in one place.
Visitors can see the change with their own eyes. Trails and lookout points are open year-round, free to access, and easy for all ages. Many come for the large animals, and stay for what returned with them: flowers, butterflies and birdlife. Local volunteers are also part of the story, helping with clean-ups, trail care and removing invasive plants.
Travellers come for the rare wildlife and the wonder of the landscape. But their presence also helps secure its future. Walks, guided visits or local stops support the ongoing care that keeps Milovice calm, wild, and alive.
