Wad Gaat Om – A collective effort to protect a fragile landscape

The Wadden Sea is constantly moving. Tides shift, winds reshape the coast, and life adapts to a delicate balance. But one challenge remains: plastic pollution.

Wad Gaat Om brings people together to respond to that challenge. Residents, visitors, businesses and organisations all take part in caring for this unique landscape.

The approach goes beyond clean-ups. While beach actions remove waste, the project also looks at the source. It encourages people to reflect on their habits, reduce plastic use and make more conscious choices.

Visitors are invited to participate, not just observe. A simple action, picking up waste, joining an activity, or learning about the ecosystem, becomes part of the experience.

This creates a shift. Tourism becomes a way to engage with the place, not just enjoy it. People leave with a stronger sense of responsibility and a deeper connection to the landscape, as they contribute to making it better.

The impact grows through repetition. Many small actions, carried out by many people, begin to restore balance.

Wad Gaat Om shows how tourism can support nature in a direct way. By combining action, awareness and shared responsibility, it turns visitors into caretakers of the places they discover.
