Follow the bison trail to rural Romania

WeWilder – Where bison bring a community back to life
In south-west Romania, near the Țarcu Mountains, a village called Armeniș is part of a quiet comeback. European bison have returned to the landscape. With them came a new question: can nature revival also help a community progress?
WeWilder is an answer. Created with WWF Romania and local people, it is a place to stay, eat and explore. Visitors come for the wild nature and the chance to see bison. They follow local paths, cross open grasslands, and discover why this area is so rich in wildlife.
The project keeps things simple and local, and supports the regional community. Meals are made with nearby ingredients and shared around the table, creating income for local partners and small producers. This matters because the grasslands around Armeniș need care. When traditional land use disappears, so do the flowers, insects, and birds.
Tourism is what drives this comeback. When travellers stay at WeWilder, eat locally, book guides and choose village-made products, they support Armeniș. That income goes into rural livelihoods and the day-to-day work that keeps grasslands open – the kind of landscape where flowers, insects and birds can thrive. Here, spotting bison is not only a highlight. It’s part of a visit that helps a place hold on to its nature and its people.
