Stay the night, revive a village 

Some villages slowly disappear. Neratov chose a different future. 

After the Second World War, this small village in the Eagle Mountains was almost abandoned. By the early 1990s, only two permanent residents remained and its church faced demolition. Instead of preserving the village as a memory, the local community began rebuilding it, with tourism becoming part of the solution. 

Today, every overnight stay helps support something real. Tourism funds sheltered employment, housing and opportunities for people with disabilities or social disadvantages, alongside local businesses including a brewery, workshops, an information centre and a barrier-free pub. Visitors don’t simply pass through; they become part of everyday community life. 

Many return as volunteers, helping maintain the village, supporting local initiatives or taking part in cultural and spiritual events throughout the year. The experience leaves a lasting impression, not because of what visitors take home, but because of what they leave behind. 

In Neratov, tourism helps rebuild far more than historic buildings. It creates opportunities for people, strengthens the local community and gives a once-forgotten village the confidence to keep looking ahead.
