From concrete yards to concert courtyards

Not every place needs to be rebuilt to find a new life. 

From an area of industrial buildings, Kaļķu Street Quarter has developed into a creative, industrial, and modern neighborhood with small factories, workshops, and cafés, where visitors can not only spend time and explore but also participate in various production processes. 

At its centre is Duna, a small independent brewery where visitors can taste the beer and watch it being made, learning the small decisions that shape every batch. Next door, Curonia Coffee Roastery turns each cup into a story, as the roaster shares the origins and quirks of the beans over a fresh pour. A working metal shop still bends and welds, now turning out everything from construction pieces to sculptural interior design. At KOPA, a Texas-style barbecue restaurant, outdoor grills do the cooking in full view of hungry onlookers. 

Food and music have also found their place here. World-renowned piano builder Dāvids Kļaviņš moved his workshop here from Hungary, crafting instruments as striking to look at as they are to hear. In summer, the courtyard at the heart of the quarter fills with tables, string lights and concerts, as Klavins Piano hosts musicians from around the world. 

 The experience is more than a collection of things to see and taste. By stopping for a coffee, tasting a locally made beer, eating a meal or joining a concert, visitors support the small businesses and makers who give the quarter its character. Their presence helps create a reason for workshops, production and cultural activity to remain here and for the area to keep evolving. 

That is what makes Kaļķu Street Quarter different: visitors do not simply consume the finished product. They get closer to the people, skills and processes behind it, while their visit helps sustain the creative economy taking shape around them.
