Sowing a Sunny Tomorrow – Sunflowers along the railways

In Slovenia, a train journey can suddenly become something you remember. Along the tracks, sunflowers begin to appear, bright, simple, impossible to ignore. That’s the idea behind Sowing a Sunny Tomorrow: a nationwide initiative that gives new life to the land beside railways.

It started with a moment of action, launched on World Bee Day, when local communities, schools and municipalities come together to sow seeds side by side.

Railway corridors often pass through overlooked spaces. Here, they become living landscapes, places where soil can recover, pollinators can feed, and biodiversity can return. Each field tells a small story: neighbours working together, students learning by doing, and travellers watching a familiar route change season by season.

This is not only about nature. It is about people too. The shared sowing events build local pride and bring different generations together around a visible result. By European Mobility Week, the fields reached full bloom, offering a hopeful sign that sustainable travel and care for nature can grow together.

Travellers play a vital role. The flowers are seen because people pass by. Every train ticket helps keep rail routes alive. The more passengers choose to take the train, the stronger the case is for turning these corridors into places that are cared for, not ignored.
