Škofja Loka Passion Play – Heritage kept alive

In Škofja Loka, a story returns every few years. Not on a stage, but across the streets of the town itself.

The Passion Play is one of Slovenia’s oldest traditions, recognised by UNESCO and brought to life by more than 1,000 local volunteers. For the people of Škofja Loka, it is not an event. It is part of who they are.

Visitors arrive to watch, but quickly realise they are witnessing something deeper. Costumes are handmade, roles are passed across generations, and the entire town becomes part of the performance. The experience feels shared, not staged.

Tourism plays an important role in keeping this tradition alive. Each visit helps support the organisation of the play, the preparation of participants and the preservation of the town’s historic setting.

But the impact goes further. Visitor interest reinforces local pride. It gives people a reason to stay involved, to pass on knowledge, and to keep the tradition meaningful.

Guests also connect with the wider community, discovering local crafts, food and services that benefit from this shared moment.

Tourism gives back to the tradition, strengthening it and keeping it alive. A visit becomes a way to help a community carry its story forward, together.
