Kamnik-Savinja Alps – A network of water trails

In the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, water is everywhere. More than 100 springs, streams and waterfalls, three lakes and four crystal-clear rivers flow through the mountains, feeding the communities below. Here, water is not simply part of the scenery, it is what gives the landscape its life.

The Kamnik-Savinja Alps Water Trails invite visitors to discover this water world on foot. The 190-kilometre circular route follows existing paths through valleys and mountain landscapes, crossing the border between Slovenia and Austria and connecting springs, rivers, lakes and waterfalls along the way. Divided into 11 stages, the trail offers travellers a chance to experience the mountains at a slower pace.

Along the way, water becomes the guide. Visitors can walk from one spring to the next, fill their bottle directly from a source of drinking water, listen to the sound of streams and waterfalls, and discover the stories behind the waters that shape the region.

By bringing visitors closer to the sources of the region’s water, the trail encourages them to understand its value. A spring becomes more than a refreshing stop on a hike; it becomes part of a much larger system that sustains landscapes, wildlife and communities.

The goal is simple. The more closely visitors experience the water, the more they can appreciate why it matters. Tourism becomes a way of sharing knowledge about a resource that is easy to take for granted, helping turn the region’s water wealth into something people notice, understand and value.

By following existing paths and connecting natural attractions, the trail turns a journey thorugh nature into an opportunity to appreciate the true value of a resources often taken for granted.
