Sterke Yerke – A raft that transforms awareness into action

It starts with plastic. Not hidden, but visible, collected, and turned into something unexpected.

Sterke Yerke is a raft built from reclaimed plastic, sailing across the North Sea and the Wadden region. But it is more than a vessel. It is a message in motion.

Led by a new generation of changemakers, the project combines adventure with purpose. Expeditions raise awareness about plastic pollution, while also collecting data and monitoring water quality. Each journey brings a new understanding of the challenges facing marine ecosystems.

Visitors and communities are part of this story. They follow the journeys, take part in activities and reflect on their own role in the system. The experience is not distant. It invites participation.

This is where tourism becomes something different. It moves beyond observation and into engagement. Awareness turns into action, and action creates change.

At the same time, the initiative builds strong social connections. Collaboration, learning and shared purpose bring people together around a common goal. Sterke Yerke shows how a simple idea can travel far. By turning waste into movement, it creates a journey that reconnects people with the sea and with their responsibility towards it.
