What if discovering Latvia meant being invited into someone’s home? 

A few times a year, something unusual happens across the Latvian countryside: front doors swing open, kitchen tables fill with visitors, and hosts turn their homes into cafés for a weekend. This is Home Café Days, a tradition born in Helsinki but now deeply rooted in Latvia, with more than 400 home cafés welcoming travellers into the everyday life, sharing flavours and stories of the regions. There’s no standard menu here. Each host cooks what feels close to home: a recipe passed down from a grandmother, a dish rediscovered in an old handwritten cookbook, or something inspired by years of travel. You might find grilled river trout with buttery dill potatoes at one table, wild strawberry sorbet or homemade cider at another. Each meal offers a taste of the place and a story about the people who live there. 

The experience often continues beyond the plate. Hosts may invite guests to craft workshops, farm tours, music and games, or simply to sit under an apple tree and talk. Visitors are not just eating in the countryside; they are being welcomed into the places, traditions and relationships that make each region unique. 

And the invitation goes both ways. By travelling to these home cafés, eating local food and spending time with their hosts, visitors help bring attention and income to rural communities. The initiative also gives participants an opportunity to attend seminars on hospitality, event decoration, and marketing to enhance their cafe offerings. 

For the traveller, it is a meal that becomes something more: a chance to meet the people behind a place and to leave having contributed, in a small but tangible way, to the life of the community they came to discover.
